Q: How did St Lucia get its name

A: Brisbane’s early european settlers, as the explorers before them, often chose feature and location names familiar to them from their place of origin. St Lucia was no exception and there may have been a touch of one-upmanship in play. William Dart had named his farm on the flats ‘Coldridge’ after his birthplace in Devon, William Alexander Wilson followed suit, his sugar plantation and the subsequent residential estate he developed using ‘St Lucia’ in its title. His parents were on ‘colonial’ service in the Caribbean at the time
